Walk Watch Write Challenge: Day 2

The Amber Eyes

He walked through the heat, the sands shimmering in the fiery dusk. The sickly sweet scent of blood coiled around his nose, his throat, caressing his tongue. With every step he traced the path of the ancients, his footprints breathing life into flames of the past.

In the dying sun, the amber eyes of the foxes gleamed, their bronze, intertwined bodies burning his skin.

He was close.

Above the sea of blood and sand, it stood alone. A blackened hand, once a thing of flesh and bone, rose from its tomb, its fingers twisting, stretching, reaching.

He knelt by its side. He saw the charred skin, the veins that once coursed with life, now only dust.

He extended his hand. His pulse pounded beneath the armlet, every beat drawing the creatures closer and closer to his body. Their amber eyes blazed within his own.

He wrapped his fingers around the black hand.

And pulled.

 To be continued…

Well, I certainly surprised myself with that!

I spotted today’s interesting piece in the window of a local jewellery shop. It was a bracelet, crafted from two intertwined bronze animals. They looked like foxes, but seemed rather exotic due to their colouring and unusual shape. Their golden paws were elongated, and looked more like hands. Their heads and bodies were each adorned with two amber stones set in gold, along with several other smaller jewels. I tried to get a photo for you, but I am always scared of being told off for taking pictures of things in shop windows (is that totally irrational?) so it came out a bit blurry.

As soon as I saw this bracelet my mind was conjuring images of distant lands, places of magic, legend and lore. I walked home, imagining who would wear such an item, and what this could mean about that person, or what it represented. I have a shadowy impression of someone lurking in the back of my mind. I sat down, and wrote ‘The Amber Eyes’. It is just  a teaser, and I have no idea how this story continues, but I may keep working on it to find out.
